Day 1: Minto Cup

 

The 73rd Minto Cup held game one of the tournament and it was an instant classic from the opening buzzer.

The Coquitlam Adanacs would eventually take the tournament opener 8-7. But it was not for a lack of effort from the Orangeville Northmen. The team from Ontario peppered Adanac goalie Christian DelBianco with 59 shots. The Northmen were unable to contain sharpshooter John Hofseth who had three goals.

Orangeville Northemen: Joel Tinney.

The second game of the evening featured the Delta Islanders against the Calgary Mountaineers. Calgary quickly got out to a three goal lead, which the Islanders chipped away at and eventually evened the score. But that was the highlight for the Islanders. The Mountaineers quickly took over the game.Although both teams had 50 shots on goal, that was the only part of the game that was close. The Mountaineers coasted to a 13-5 victory.

The Coquitlam Adanacs will take on the Calgary Mountaineers in the early game Sunday (21st) at 5:00pm. While the Orangeville Northmen take on the other BC team, the Delta Jr Islanders at 8:00pm Sunday(20th).

The Mountaineers are now the first Albertan team in Minto Cup history to win a game.
