Day 3: Minto Cup Recap

Going into Day Three of the Minto Cup, the semi-finals were already set between the Calgary Mountaineers and the Orangeville Northmen. But both teams had to play their final game of the round robin against each other. The game could be best described as cautious. Orangeville scratched top stars Adam Charalambides and Thomas Hogarth while Calgary started their back up goalie instead of perennial starter Doug Gardner. The modest game was sitting at 3-2 for Calgary halfway through the second period where it remained until the third when the teams exchanged goals. Calgary added one more in the final frame to take the victory 5-3.

It was a tale of two different teams in the late game. Delta making their first ever Minto Cup appearance and had yet to win a game going into the final night of the round robin. While heading into the evening’s action the Coquitlam Adanacs were undefeated in the 2016 tournament and have visited the finals five of the last six years including a Minto Cup victory in 2010. Delta put the pressure on early and came up with a four goal first period, they continued on to cruise to a 6-3 lead after forty minutes. Both teams tallied one more in the third to end the round robin off with a 7-4 Delta victory.

The Delta Islanders will be exiting the tournament after going 1-2. The Calgary Mountaineers and Orangeville Northmen will revisit their rivalry Tuesday night in the semi-final with Calgary being the home team after Monday’s victory. Meanwhile, the Coquitlam Adanacs will reman idle for two days as they await the winner of the semi final.
