Adanacs repeat as Minto Cup champs, reversing 50+-year dry spell for B.C. teams to win back East
The Coquitlam Adanacs swept the Orangeville Northmen to capture back to back Minto Cup championships, winning the best-of-three finals series in two straight games with an 11-10 victory at the Meridian Centre St. Catharines, Ont.
The Adanacs became the first team from outside of Ontario to win a Minto Cup in that province since 1977 when the Burnaby Lakers defeated the Whitby Warriors.
It's Coquitlam's second straight final-series sweep over the Northmen. The Adanacs won Game 1 of the best-of-three final 7-5 before coming back against the Ontario champions from Orangeville.
BCJALL playoff MVP and Coquitlam forward Ryan Colsey led the Adanacs with a five-goal performance and was named Coquitlam's player of the game.
In a thrilling, wild, dramatic and captivating final period, Orangeville once held a two-goal lead at 9-7 before the Adanacs fired four straight to take an 11-9 lead. The Northmen made it 11-10 with just under four minutes remaining. But goalkeeper Jack Kask (38 saves, many highlight reel worthy) and the Coquitlam defense shut the door in the final possessions and the Adanacs held on the for win.
Adanac Cody Malawsky finished with 9 goals and 12 assists(22 points) at the tournament as was named Minto Cup MVP.
