Delta Defeats New Westminster for 1st Win at Home

By Jen Mutas

From my seat behind the penalty box, both teams were playing safe ball in the first. Not a lot of penalties or physical play in general.

After 20 minutes it was 4-3 for Delta after John Canil, Justin Lalli, Corey Williamson, and Dane Stevens capitalized for the home crowd.

Jordan McBride scored 2 in the first for the Bellies and Kyle Belton made sure his pass from Alex Turner found the back of the net.

The second was a completely different match- Delta realizing they were giving NW a run, and the Salmonbellies not wanting another mark in the loss column.

New West put on the pressure, double teaming Islander runners and checking a lot harder. But the Islanders were patient and kept their cool, which landed New West in the box with a couple of unsportsmanlike calls.

The Salmonbellies pulled Ray Hodgekinson halfway through and Sean Tessarollo took over to try and bring the Bellies back.

Delta took advantage on the power play and even looked solid short handed. Justin Lalli put up two more goals, Carlton Shuss capitalized on the power play, and Tayler Heatherington had an open netter at the end of the period.

Delta was up 8-4 on the Bellies at the end of the second.

Alex Turner from New West got on the score sheet four minutes in. Max Gallant proved he doesn’t need to be on his feet to have a good game, scoring two goals flying in just outside the crease.

But the Islanders were in control, even when they were given a major penalty five minutes in. Kevin Guichon scored short handed for Delta, and Corey Williamson scored sliding across the floor for his second of the night. John Canil also put in his second, just after Williamson’s marker.

Goaltending was huge for the Islanders. Mike Lowe looked calm and in control for the full 60 minutes, and stopped 51 shots.

Final score from Sun God Arena was 11-8 in favour of the Islanders.
