Islanders take game 1 in a wild one

Game 1 between the New Westminster Salmonbellies and Delta Islanders took place on Sunday evening at the Ladner Lesiure Centre as both teams are vying a spot in the finals.

The Delta Islanders wasted little to no time in getting on the board as ex-Salmonbellies player, Tyrell Hamer-Jackson scored 7 seconds into the first period.

The Salmonbellies responded 33 seconds later when Johnny Pearson scored to make it 1-1, but the Islanders went on a roll after. After Islanders’ Riley Philips goal at 14:44, it seemed like everyone wanted to drop the gloves and get it out of the way. After some settling down, the game didn't see another goal till the 7:29 mark, when Philips scored again to make it 3-1. Shortly after, EvanMessenger and AidanMilburn scored on the power play to make it 5-1 with 3:16 left to go in the first period.

The Salmonbellies cut the lead to 3 with 1:59 left, but it was still quite an uphill battle to climb heading into the second period.

The second period certainly saw less penalties, but the same amount of goals as the first period. Unfortunately for one team, the second period was very one-sided.

Milburn scored his second of the game 2:46 into the second period followed by his third of the game with 11:25 to go as the Islanders took a commanding 7-2 lead.

The Islanders continued to pour it on as JaydenCampbell, ReeceCallies and Cam Lilligan each scored to make it 10-2 with 4:47 to go.

To round out the second period, Pearson scored for the ‘Bellies and Nick Jensen for the Islanders as the scoreboard showed 11-3 at the end of the period.

Down by 8, the Salmonbellies were not going to give up. Connor Robinson scored on the power play with 14:29 left and then what we all expect when a game is out of hand, happened. It was mayhem on the floor as gloves and helmets were scattered all over and needless to say, there were ejections all around. At the end of it all, the Salmonbellies ended up with a power play for practically the rest of the game.

The Islanders scored short-handed, but it was the ‘Bellies who capitalized a lot more on their chances as they scored 3 goals on the power play and with 24 shots on goal, they just couldn't put a few more in to catch up as the Islanders take game 1, 12-7.
